The reproductive system is complex. That is why sometimes complications can arise. Women are especially susceptible to reproductive issues. Fortunately, modern medicine has developed a new, minimally invasive surgery called, ‘adnexal surgery’ to help with reproductive issues that arise.

Adnexal surgery, also known as laparoscopic surgery, is done using a small telescope attached to a camera. The laparoscope can then be inserted through the body with a very small incision. The laparoscope allows for the doctor to see any issues occurring inside the body of the patient without making a large incision. As a result, adnexal surgery usually requires much less recovery time, and has a lowered risk of infection.

One common reason adnexal surgery is used is for the removal of an ovarian cyst. These cysts are even sometimes referred to as adnexal mass. A cyst is a collection of fluid (or sometimes other substances) in tissue. While most cysts are benign (does not cause cancer) some can become cancerous. That is why often ovarian cysts are removed as a safety measure.

Some cysts are removed for other reasons. Follicular cysts for instance, grow in the area where eggs ripen and prepare for ovulation. These cysts are capable of growing as large as a tennis ball, and can cause severe pain and discomfort.

Adnexal surgery is not just used for removing cysts. Another common procedure is the unblocking of fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes are responsible for carrying an egg from an ovary to the uterus. Damage to these tubes can make fertilization difficult. Adnexal surgery provides a minimally invasive way to unblock fallopian tubes and/or repair damage. Unblocking the fallopian tubes helps to increase chances of fertilization, and can even reduce pain.

Byron A Brown MD is a dedicated MD that has helped a number of women manage their reproductive health. He is committed to his work, as well as to educating women about reproductive medicine.
