Chancellor of the Metropolis of Chicago, Bishop Demetrios grew up as an active participant in the life of the city's historic Assumption Greek Orthodox Community. In 2003, he was named as “one of the twelve people to watch” by The Chicago Sun-Times. He has constantly worked to improve the relationships between Chicago’s Greek Orthodox Community with other local Orthodox bodies, as well as other Christian & non-Christian groups.

[b]Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos[/b] also founded the “Bishop’s Task Force on AIDS “to address the issues led by the AIDS crises in the United States. For this, he received the Alexian Brothers AIDS Ministry 2005 President’s Award. He also gained the official recognition by the United States of the Genocide against the Christian minority population of Syria and Iraq. A documentary featuring Bishop Demetrios was also released.

[b]About Bishop Demetrios[/b]

[b]Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos[/b] was born to first-generation Greek American family, Merope and the late Christ J. Kantzavelos. He attended Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, and attained a degree in divinity. After his graduation, he went for his post-graduation in the area of metaphysics, in the philosophy program of Chicago's Loyola University. In 1992, Demetrios ordained to the priesthood, and in 1995, was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite by Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago. He was consecrated as the Bishop of Mokissos on December 9, 2006. Demetrios co-founded a local intiative to strengthen Turkish and Greek relations. He even had established the Bishop's Task Force on AIDS, the first formal Orthodox Christian response to this epidemic in the western dimension. He has also led many Hellenic organizations and cultural events.
