It has been reported that Jeffrey Lichtman was reprimanded by the US judge for accusing two Mexican presidents of taking bribes. The opening statement allegedly was given during Guzmań’s New York trail.

As per the reports, a request was made to US district judge Brian Cogan by Federal Prosecutors to remove the defense’s opening statement. It is said that the statement was taken as an improper argument with unnoticed affirmative defenses and inadmissible hearsay. Reports claim that the judge admonished Jeffrey Lichtman by saying that it went “far afield of direct or circumstantial proof”. Also, it is reported that Cogan claimed the attorney’s opening misleading. In his defense, it is said that Lichtman asserted that his client was not the cartel drug dealing leader who sent tons of cocaine into the US. It has been reported that the attorney shifted the guilt to another suspected cartel drug trafficker, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. It is said Lichtman claimed that Zambada currently is on the loose in Mexico because of the high amount of bribes paid to the present and former Mexico presidents. Jeffrey Lichtman reportedly exposed the true working nature of the governments including how they behave. The potentiality of bribing even the highest level government officials even American law enforcement agents becoming corrupt was highlighted by the attorney to the jurors, according to the reports. It is alleged that the Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto’s spokesperson called the accusation “completely false and defamatory”. Also, the former president claimed the allegations as sham and reckless. It is reported that Guzmań currently is under solitary confinement since last year after his extradition. It is said that he pleaded not guilty to the charges for smuggling stacks of cocaine into the US.
