September 30, 2020, ·
Hello Everyone,
Here is the recap of the September 27 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock!
We welcomed another guest on the show this week, as Altoona native, musician, and composer Don Hughes (www.donhughesmusic.com) joined us in the studio! We discussed Don's ambitious new album, A Hero's Journey, where Don attempted to tell a story with instrumental music, without singing or lyrics! Don provided insight on the album and its creation, and we heard tracks from it as well! Along the way, we introduced new songs from Blood Union, Buggsy Rock, Bigfoot's Ugly Mansion, and Marcel Ray Duriez. We also updated "Local Music News," dug a 1987 tune from State College's Stolyn Hours from the archive for this week's "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Jae Smith's Murmur CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"
Here is this week's playlist:
HOUR ONE:
CELL 15 - "Chapter One"
ANATOMY OF THE SACRED - "Narcissi"

We'll also update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the vault, step "Across State Lines" to hear a song from an independent band or artist from outside of PA, and review We Came From Space's While You Were Away CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Another Pittsburgh live music venue has closed its doors permanently due to financial hardships stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rex Theater announced the closure this past week on social media, citing “ongoing hardship and uncertain future caused by the COVID pandemic.” A former Vaudeville stage first constructed in 1905, the Rex Theater had been a live music venue for the past 11 years; hosting local, regional, and national touring acts. According to owner Ben Pinegar, efforts to keep the venue open through fundraisers and the “Save Our Stages” campaign were not enough to pay the bills and prevent its closure.
The area music scene mourns the passing of Paul Lanzendorfer on Monday (Sept. 21) at age 70 following an illness. Paul was a longtime musician who had performed with various bands for over 55 years, including his longtime stint as bass player for Cambria County-based rock band Totem. We at the “Homegrown Rocker” extend our heartfelt sympathies to Paul’s family, friends, and musical colleagues.
