Sara Gelbard Releases New Memoir - The Sound of Her Voice

Author Sara Gelbard is pleased to announce the release of her new memoir, The Sound of Her Voice. Released by Adelaide Books, Sara’s story is for anyone who has ever felt the need to heal inner wounds.

A poetic and unusually constructed memoir, THE SOUND OF HER VOICE: A MEMOIR (Adelaide Books/ISBN-13: 978-1-952570-19-3/172 pages/December 2020), is Sara Gelbard’s story of her experience growing up on one of the first kibbutzim in Israel and how she was forced to repress her individuality, and the self-expression of a normal childhood. This book sensitively follows her personal journey through life from Israel to New York and Uruguay and gives voice to how she finally created a home for herself and in her heart and healed what she lost.

It was by the sea in Punta del Este, Uruguay, where Sara lives with her husband, that the voice of the child she was came to her and where she began to write their story. As was customary in the early, stricter kibbutzim, Sara was placed in the children’s house right after birth -- away from the physical love and security of her parents. This abandonment built a wall between Sara and her mother. As a child, Sara often felt frightened, silenced, and lonely. This followed her throughout her life.

During the process of writing THE SOUND OF HER VOICE: A MEMOIR, Sara learned so much – what her own mother had been through, the price Sara paid for being a second-generation Holocaust survivor, where her real riches are, what has influenced her, and what home means to her. This first-hand account provides a unique and enlightening perspective about early kibbutz life in the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Sprinkled with insightful haikus, the memoir follows Sara’s life from childhood to the Israeli Army where she rose to the rank of Navy officer to her ultimate rejection by Kibbutz leaders for being so independent. After attending college on her own and a short teaching career, Sara left Israel for New York where she had to struggle to learn the language, develop a career and find her home. Ultimately, Sara found it in her work, her friends, and her husband. THE SOUND OF HER VOICE: A MEMOIR elegantly explores her coming to terms with the emotional loneliness of her upbringing and how she repaired that wound to create a life full of love, work and beauty.
This is a story for any woman who has fought to find her voice, who needs to give love to what was abandoned in her. The story of deep listening to find ways to grieve what needs to be grieved, and to be a witness to the kibbutz experience. The entire book speaks to all of us who have a voice inside us that must be listened to if we want to open our hearts.

THE SOUND OF HER VOICE: A MEMOIR is available for purchase through Amazon, paperback/$19.60 and Kindle E-book/$7.90 and Barnes&Noble.com
