Many a Sydney resident is going to go home with a smile on their face on the 21st of December. The Christmas holiday is soon to be upon us, and with it, a welcome break from routine, the company of good friends and family, and some of the longest days of the year.

With this excitement comes the chance to indulge ourselves, and many a new years’ resolution is built around a weight-loss goal, the result of a few weeks’ of good drink and sugary treats. But it is our teeth that could suffer the worst through all of this. And damage to them cannot be easily worked off in the gym.

However, with a few key habits, you can ease the pressure on your pearly whites, and make sure that you don’t enter 2019 with a trip to your dentist’s office to get a cavity filled.

No Gaps Dental recommends swilling water around your mouth after a sugary treat. This helps to dilute the acids inherent to sugar breaking down, and helps to encourage the production of saliva, which helps to balance the PH in your mouth.

They also recommend that rather than grazing throughout the day, you limit your sugary intake to one big score. This allows your teeth to recover, and limits the amount of times in a day that your enamel will need to stand up to acidic onslaughts.

Finally, above all, the festive atmosphere should not distract you from your oral care regime. Make sure that you are brushing consistently, and flossing, but remember – leave an hour after your dessert and your brushing. This will let your enamel recover prior to being brushed by granular toothpaste, which can actually hurt it more.
