If you have been looking into organic mattresses, then you have probably come across the terms Dunlop and Talalay. Although both are made from natural latex, they undergo different manufacturing processes making Dunlop mattresses different from the Talalay variety. It is important to have the right information about both to be able to make a good final decision.

Dunlop latex

The Dunlop manufacturing process for natural latex mattresses has been in existence since 1929. The process begins with extracting a thick rubber serum or sap from a rubber tree. This is then placed in a centrifuge and whipped to form froth. This froth is poured into a mould before it is covered and seam baked. The sediments that are naturally present in the latex mixture settle at the bottom of this mould. This is the reason why Dunlop mattresses tend to be firmer towards the bottom layer of the mattress.

Talalay latex

Talalay latex undergoes much of the same process as Dunlop but with two additional steps. When the latex is poured into the mould, it is sealed before the rest of the process is undertaken in a vacuum chamber. Another significant difference is that the mould is flash-frozen before baking. The result is a more consistent cell structure from one edge of the latex mattress to the other as well as from top to bottom. This type of mattress is also more expensive than Dunlop. In addition to this, larger mattresses are seamed using natural latex glue which is safe and non-toxic. The locations of the seams vary depending on the manufacturer.

Choosing between the two

Both mattresses are great options and are superior to conventional mattress materials. Making the choice is mostly a matter of personal preference. Dunlop for example is denser, which makes it a good option for someone looking for a firm mattress. Talalay on the other hand is an ideal choice for someone looking for a softer surface with the same feel as a pillow. It is all a matter of your sleeping preferences and what kind of surface you like to sleep on.

For households with children, Dunlop is a better choice as it is better able to withstand wear and tear common with children such as jumping on the bed. Consider complementing your organic mattress with natural wool duvet and other natural bedding to complete the set.
