Madrid, Spain, May 03, 2013 - The National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) is exhibiting works by artists such as Picasso, Gaudí, Dalí and Barceló until June 30.

The show, entitled “From Picasso to Barceló: 20th Century Spanish Sculpture”, was organised to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and China. Visitors can see around 100 works representing thehistory of sculpture in Spain, from the earliest big names through to the present day, accompanied by drawings by the same artists.

NAMOC director and art critic Fan Di An described this as a “very rich” collection, including works by artists “who have served as the inspiration for many Chinese in developing their own creations”. “Spain is a country with a strong tradition of culture and art. I hope we will be able to bring modern artworks from Spain to China again in future, which could help to strengthen relations, exchange and shared knowledge between the artists of both countries", he added.

The collection on show, including pieces by Chillida, Miró, Gaudí, Picasso, Dalí and Tàpies, comes from the ICO Museum, and has been exhibited in many cities all over the world in the past 20 years. This is the first time it has come to China, where people will be able to “take a stroll through Spanish 20th Century art” taking in an “overview of its evolution over the past 50 years”, according to Román Escolano, President of the ICO Foundation.

The inauguration was also attended by Spain’s new Ambassador to the People’s Republic, Manuel Valencia, who spoke about the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Spain and China, highlighting the fact that contact and exchange in the political, economic and cultural spheres “has grown substantially, especially in recent years”.
