If you have been following this international break very closely, you would have noticed one thing: Club football is way better to watch than international soccer. I mean, apart from the World Cup, what other international tournament does one look forward to in any given year? I know it is always a privilege for most players to represent their countries – probably the highest honour as a footballer – but can you really look me in the eye and tell me that Harry Kane does not have one eye on the mouth-watering Champions League quarter-final clash against Raheem Sterling, his national team-mate?
I believe I have digressed enough.
After easily defeating, it still looks like it is France that would probably win the next major international tournament which happens to be the 2020 European Championship to be held in (drum roll) 12 different countries to mark the tournament’s 60th anniversary.
Such is the depth of the French National Team that players like Alexander Lacazette, Benjamin Mendy, Adrien Rabiot, Aymeric Laporte, Anthony Martial (and co.) cannot make the team.
Now, this is not a dig at the other teams. The likes of England (who have seemingly continued to improve even after the World Cup), Germany (who seem to be recapturing some of their glory days after their very abysmal showing in their last major tournament), Belgium (whose ‘Golden Generation’ is not so golden anymore and need to win a major tournament to be remembered as one of the best national teams), Italy (who did not feature at the last major tournament and is looking like a very youthful team that can roll with the big boys), Holland (who also did not feature in the last tournament and have recently discovered some good form under new coach Ronald Koeman) and so on would also be in the tournament with good chances of winning it.
Even the European Championship holders, Portugal (just in case we are not on the same page) has not been playing very well partly because a core of their top performers are winding down their careers. To be more specific; Ronaldo, who will be 35 and then some by the time the tournament kicks off next year is their best and most consistent performer. He is also one of the oldest players in the team. Ronaldo is an irreplaceable player and his absence would most likely have a very detrimental effect on any team he represents.
Ultimately, the French National Team is a set of extremely talented and experienced players (and Coach) and has the ability to take on any team in the world right now. Oh, they are also the World Cup holders as well. Would they have the ability to go one better and lift the trophy come 2020? (we are not putting the chicken before the egg because they still need to qualify first) We will soon find out.
