With Arsenal losing to Manchester City in their first game of the season, this game against Chelsea was to prove to everyone (themselves especially) that the spirit of recent Wenger seasons had been banished. Everything was okay for only nine minutes.
Ross Barkley released Marcus Alonso with a gorgeous pass and all he had to do was square it to Pedro who did the rest. Some very shocking high-line from Arsenal in the build-up to the goal.
Then Aubameyang had a glorious chance to make it 1-1. How he contrived to miss an open goal is a great mystery.

One minute after the miss, there was a second for Chelsea.

Alvaro Morata was sent through on goal and showed some amazing feet to beat Mustafi and slot it past Petr Cech. At that point, we could not even tell if Arsene Wenger was still the coach.
But then Arsenal took control and before long, Mkhitarayan halved the deficit. He had also missed an earlier chance but he would probably be forgiven.

Four minutes later, Alex Iwobi levelled for Arsenal.

At this point, both London teams were showing some very shocking defending traits.
At the end of the day, Eden Hazard came off the bench, was a massive influence and created the third and final goal for Chelsea’s Marcus Alonso.

The defending was generally atrocious at both ends and there needs to be serious focus and improvement.

Barcelona reaches another milestone- with Lionel Mess’s help of course.
Now that a certain footballer has gone on to test himself in Italy, Turin to be precise, we should not be having an argument on who the best player in Spain is anytime soon. Barcelona scored their 600th game in La Liga against Deportivo Alaves. No prizes for guessing who scored it. Since scoring Barcelona’s 5000th goal, Messi has contributed to 462 of the next 1,000. Staggering stuff. For the game itself, it was not as easy as the scoreline suggested. Barcelona labored initially but were eventually able to break the deadlock. Again, no prizes for guessing who did.

Manchester City does not look like slowing down anytime soon.

After discovering that Kevin de Bruyne would be out for three months, many people thought Manchester City would struggle. If you only saw the results and not the actual match, you would think that de Bruyne actually played. Or maybe this is not the game to judge his absence with. It must feel really good to put six past the only team that prevented you from scoring at home the season before. Very reassuring thumping.

Real Madrid start life without Ronaldo.

Real Madrid played their first game without arguably their best player ever for the first time in almost 10 years. He did not retire, he just grew tired of them (ouch). Goals from Carvajal and Bale was enough for a comfortable win. Ronaldo will not be missed. Or will he?
