Geneva (May 14, 2025) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 061.25, reporting on New Zealand’s prohibition on the manufacture and use of three persistent organic pollutant (POP) chemicals.
POP chemicals are known to cause harm to human, animal and environmental health. The Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) (Schedules 1AA and 2A) Order 2025, (the Order) is effective from March 14, 2025. It adds the following applications of POP chemicals to the HSNO:
• Methoxychlor – was used in both agricultural and veterinary sectors (now obsolete)
• Dechlorane Plus – flame retardant used in plastics, adhesives and sealants, as well as in cable and wire coatings in motor vehicles
• UV-328 – ultra-violet (UV) inhibitor used to protect materials against discoloration and degradation under sunlight. Its primary uses are in paints and coatings and as an additive in plastic materials
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 061.25 includes a useful table outlining highlights of the Order, including the applicable substances, their scope and requirements.
Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 061.25 for more details.
