SGS publishes SafeGuardS summarizing Australia’s new requirements for toys.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS looking at Australia’s new, more stringent requirements for toys with small parts that could present a choking or suffocation hazard.

Current requirements can be found in Consumer Protection Notice No. 14 of 2003, amended by Consumer Protection No. 1 of 2005, and the new requirements are in Consumer Goods (Toys for Children up to and including 36 Months of Age) Safety Standard 2023.

In addition to a new list of standards presumed to show conformity, the new requirements also contain specific provisions relating to toys that contain batteries.

SGS has published SafeGuardS 117.23 to help stakeholders understand the impact of the new Australian rules. In addition to details of the transition period, the SafeGuardS also contains an updated list of the standards contained in the 2023 regulation and details of the new battery requirements.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 117.23 for more information.
