SGS reviews EN 71-4:2020+A1:2025, outlining new safety rules for children's chemistry experiment sets.

Geneva (June 17, 2025) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 076.25, providing an overview of the latest standard for experimental sets for chemistry and related activities, EN 71-4:2020+A1:2025, issued by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).

Released in April 2025, EN 71-4:2020+A1:2025 specifies updated safety requirements regarding the maximum allowable quantity or concentration of certain substances and mixtures in experimental chemistry sets and related kits. These include items such as crystal growing kits, carbon dioxide-generating sets, and supplementary kits.

The standard is expected to attain national standard status by October 2025, at which point any conflicting national standards must be withdrawn. It is also anticipated to be harmonized under Directive 2009/48/EC on toy safety, pending formal acceptance by the European Commission and publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).

Importantly, it should be noted EN 71-4:2020+A1:2025 does not apply to combined sets, such as a chemistry set packaged with a crystal set.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market developments that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 076.25 contains a summary of the standard along with a table detailing the key changes.

Stakeholders are encouraged to review SafeGuardS 076.25 for more details.
