Israel’s Minister of Environmental Protection has passed an amendment to its Wildlife Protection Law that makes it the first country in the world to ban the sale of fur for the fashion industry.

Signed into law on June 9, 2021, the amendment prohibits the sale and purchase of fur and fur products and is intended to make Israel’s fashion market more environmentally friendly.

The law includes several exemptions. Permission can be granted to trade fur and fur products that are used in:
• Scientific research
• Education and instruction
• Religious purposes and traditions

In Israel, Orthodox Jewish men often wear a fur hat known as a shtreimel on the Shabbat and during holidays. This will not be affected by the law, although importers are now required to apply for a special permit.

The ban on the sale of fur becomes effective in December 2021.
