Health Canada has released an updated version of its industry guide for food contact glazed ceramics and glassware product manufacturers.

Published in February 2021, the guide applies to products that are subject to:
• Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA)
• Glazed Ceramics and Glassware Regulations (GCGR)

It contains several important pieces of information to help stakeholders meet these requirements, including:
• Emphasizing that undecorated glass food ware products are not within the scope of the GCGR
• Providing 10 illustrative examples of products that fall within the scope of the GCGR
• Summarizing the migration limits for lead and cadmium in different product types:
o Migratable lead (mg/L):
- Flatware: 3.0
- Small hollowware, other than cups or mugs (less than 1.1L): 2.0
- Large hollowware, other than pitchers (1.1L or larger): 1.0
- Cups or mugs: 0.5
- Pitchers: 0.5
o Cadmium (mg/L):
- Flatware: .050
- Small hollowware, other than cups or mugs (less than 1.1L): 0.50
- Large hollowware, other than pitchers (1.1L or larger): 0.25
- Cups or mugs: 0.50
- Pitchers: 0.25
• Design features or permanent warnings (English and French) for glazed ceramic and glassware products that are intended for ornamental use only and are unsuitable for storing, preparing or serving food. NB. Not required to conform to migratable lead and cadmium limits in GCGR
• Indicating the type of permanent warnings that may be used for ornamental glazed ceramic and glassware products – engraved, stamped or printed directly onto the product
• Providing an illustrative example of a permanent warning for ornamental glazed ceramic and glassware products

It should be noted ‘pitchers’ does not include creamers, coffeepots and teapots.
