Formaldehyde in Composite Wood Products – An expert guide to North American standards

Posted November 29, 2021 by BenChristie

Exploring North American legislation on formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, presents a complimentary webinar ‘Composite Wood Products & Formaldehyde – An expert guide to North American standards’ on December 9. This event will introduce updated emission standards implemented by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Canada’s new regulations.

Used in a huge variety of composite wood products including hardwood plywood (HWPW), medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and particleboard (PB), formaldehyde is a well-known toxic substance. As a carcinogen, its use in composite wood panels included in cabinets, countertops, furniture, mobile homes, toys, travel trailers and campers as well as window frames, is subject to differing safety regulations across North America.

In particular, the US EPA has introduced a final rule to implement its Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products Act (Toxic Substance Control Act Title VI, TSCA Title VI). This will be examined, and similarities and differences between these US-wide requirements, those of California in relation to the California Air Resources Board and Canada’s new emissions regulations will be discussed. SGS expert Dr Hing Wo Tsang will also offer solutions for third-party certification.

The webinar will be a key resource for quality and compliance professionals, selling stand-alone composite wood panel products and finished goods to North American markets – particularly with regard to record-keeping, reporting and labeling responsibilities.
