EU Updates Standard for Olfactory Board Games, Cosmetic Kits and Gustative Games

Posted June 3, 2021 by BenChristie

SGS provides an overview of the changes brought in by CEN’s new standard for olfactory board games, cosmetic kits and gustative games.

Suppliers of olfactory board games, cosmetic toy kits and gustative games are reminded the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has recently published an updated version of their safety standard – EN 71-13:2021.

Issued in April 2021, the 2021 iteration of the standard covers the use of substances and mixtures in these products and their supplementary sets. In comparison to the 2014 version, the new standard contains changes to:

• Further requirements for all types of olfactory board games
• General requirements for cosmetic kits and gustative games
• General equipment and child resistant containers
• Warnings and markings
• Information on first aid and contents labeling

To see a comprehensive overview of the differences between the 2014 and 2021 versions of the standard, view SGS’s original SafeGuard 063/21.

The standard is expected to be given the status of a national standard by October 2021. Conflicting national standards must be withdrawn by April 2022. It is also expected that the standard will be harmonized with the European Toy Safety Directive upon acceptance by the European Commission and publication in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU).
