SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 152.24 on California’s prohibition of Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in intravenous solution containers (IV bags) and IV tubing.

AB 2300 was signed into law on September 25, 2024, making California the first US jurisdiction to restrict ortho-phthalates in medical devices. DEHP is an ortho-phthalate that is commonly added to plastic materials, particularly polyvinyl chloride (PVC), as a plasticizer to increase material flexibility.

However, exposure to DEHP has now been linked to a variety of various adverse health effects, such as endocrine disruption, harm to the reproductive system and cancer.
