The Ministry of Electric Power No.1 (MoEP1) and Electricity de France SA (EDF) are undertaking to build Shweli-3 Hydroelectric Power Plant project in Myanmar.
The project involves the construction of a hydroelectric power plant with 1,050MW of installed capacity to generate 3,400GWh/year of electricity.
It includes the construction of a 120m high RCC gravity dam with reservoir capacity of 5,500 million m3, a gated spillway with design flood of 7,300m3/s, four penstocks with diameter 7.8m, an air-insulated substations (AIS) switchyard, access roads and other related facilities, the installation of four Francis turbines, generators and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.
Myanmar Geosciences Society has been appointed to undertake the Seismic Hazard Assessment and Energize Myanmar Pte Ltd appointed as the developer.
In February 2010, AF Consultant (formerly Colenco Power Engineering Ltd) and Aung Pyi Tan Co. Ltd were appointed as contractor and Consulting Engineer respectively.
Construction works are commenced in 2011.
On December 18, 2015, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Department of Electric Power Planning, Myanmar Ministry of Electric Power (MOEP) and the French electric utility Electricity de France SA (EDF) to implement under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Construction work is underway with completion expected in 2022.

Scope

The project involves the construction of a hydroelectric power plant with 1,050MW of installed capacity to generate 3,400 GWh of electricity in Momeik Township, Northern Shan State, Myanmar.
The US$1,400 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of a 120m high RCC gravity dam
2. Construction of a 5,500 million m3 capacity reservoir
3. Construction of a gated spillway
4. Construction of four penstocks with diameter 7.8m
5. Construction of an AIS switchyard
6. Construction of access roads
7. Installation of four Francis turbines
8. Installation of generators and transformers
9. Laying of transmission lines
