BD Electronics eyes Covid-19 Silver Lining: Pent-Up Component Demand?

A constant theme is emerging within semiconductor analysts’ commentaries concerning Covid-19’s impact on IC supply, demand, slumps and resurgence.

With the noted exception of flagship Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which may be facing a slower recovery, other chip sectors may surprisingly benefit in the longer term from pent-up demand for electronics as the world economy emerges from Covid-19.
Nonetheless, electronics distributor, located in Malta, “BD Electronics Ltd, sees a silver lining to the current downturn.”
Stephanie Borg, who predicts the GPU and Sensor Chip markets, made that statement last week, asserting she was revising upward BD Electronics Ltd semiconductor revenue forecast range in expectation of a strong 3rd and 4th quarter for the graphics chip market.
She concluded, “only a strong second wave of Covid-19 declared “unlikely” by the WHO could slow the electronics chip market.”
A resumption normal manufacturing output for the third and fourth quarters of 2020 is conditional on containing Covid-19, steadying of global supply chains and overall economic recovery. As infection rates spike in India and the US, we’ll soon find out if that represents fairylike thinking.
It’s difficult to say at this point whether BD Electronics Ltd.’s optimistic chip industry forecast will translate. The uncertainty is mirrored in the world stock markets.
