Press Release: Addressing Allegations of Police Misconduct and Targeted Harassment of Native American Victim by minorities

San Diego, CA – A disturbing pattern of harassment and misinformation has emerged surrounding the case of a Native American victim of police misconduct, as documented in Case #2021-0228. Following the findings of the San Diego Commission on Police Practices (CPP) regarding the unlawful actions of police officers, which included unjustified vehicle impoundment and the illegal retention of identification, the victim has faced ongoing defamation, slander, and public bullying from a faction of the community.

This case, initially brought to light in 2021, has revealed not only serious allegations of police misconduct—including the violation of Department Procedure 7.08—but also the pernicious aftermath faced by the victim, who has become a target of harassment by individuals affiliated with criminal organizations. Since the Commission’s findings were released, various members of the community have perpetuated false narratives designed to undermine the victim’s credibility, triggering a distressing wave of community division and conflict.

The circumstances surrounding the victim’s encounter with law enforcement were grave. During a routine traffic stop, the victim, an indigenous individual, experienced fatal consequences from prolonged handcuffing that led to loss of consciousness. Upon recovery, the victim discovered that critical belongings had been unlawfully retained by officers, complicating their efforts to reclaim their vehicle.

In the wake of the Commission’s procedural review, which validated the misconduct allegations against police officers, elements within the community have disproportionately targeted the victim through calculated intimidation tactics. This campaign has fostered an environment where racial prejudice and misinformation can thrive, highlighting the urgent need for community accountability and support.

The events surrounding this case emphasize the necessity of transparency, respect, and understanding within our community to heal and move forward together.”

As stakeholders in a democratic society, it is crucial for all community members, especially those in positions of influence, to critically assess the sources of information they engage with and resist the temptation to follow narratives rooted in hatred and misinformation. The fate of victims of police misconduct should not be further jeopardized by whispers fueled by ignorance and bias.

The San Diego Commission on Police Practices remains dedicated to upholding public accountability. Continued vigilance is essential to ensure that justice prevails for victims, and a robust dialogue addressing racism, harassment, and community integrity can take root.
