Giant Pacific Manta Caught Tangled in Fishing Line Cut Free by Scuba Divers in Costa Rica

While on a scuba diving tour to the Bat Islands of Costa Rica, a Giant Pacific Manta Ray who was tangled in fishing line approached one of Rocket Frog Divers customers who was able to cut free the majestic animal allowing it to swim freely again.

Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Brian Thompson, a scuba diver from Canada was expecting great things from his scuba diving vacation to Costa Rica. Excited at the prospects of diving with bull sharks at the fabled Bat Islands, Brian didn’t realize he was about to have an encounter with another marine giant that he will likely never forget.

The dive started off like any other in Costa Rica. A back roll off of Rocket Frog Divers’ vessel into the warm tropical waters of the Gulf de Papagayo in Costa Rica. Shortly after descending, Brian noticed the silhouette of a Giant Pacific Manta. Mantas, which are extremely peaceful marine animals, can grow in excess of 25 feet across. This particular manta approached Brian at which point he noticed that there was a tangled mess of fishing line wrapped around the animal.

Upon noticing this, Brian drew his dive knife from his gear and was able to cut the bulk of the fishing line away from the manta. The manta then presented itself to Brian again at which point he was able to cut the remaining line from the Manta allowing it to once again swim freely in the Pacific. What’s was special about this encounter was that the Manta didn’t take off from the dive group. The manta continued circling and interacting with the group of divers for another half hour or so after it was cut free.

This could all go down as another fish tale if not for the camera which was being operated by one of Rocket Frog Divers other customers from Brazil. The video is published on youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLww3kCEgrI.

While this offers the best video of a manta being freed from fishing line this is far from an isolated incident. Here at Rocket Frog Divers we have encountered 3 mantas that have been tangled in fishing line in September alone. As much of the line has been cut free as possible from each of the mantas but other dive shop in town have reported similar incidents.

We have to do our part to keep the beaches and oceans clean so that our future generations will be able to view and enjoy the same beautiful marine animals that we are able to today.

Rocket Frog Divers is offering a first of its kind diving expedition to the Bat Islands where this encounter took place in June of 2015. With the intention to discover new dive sites and hopefully discover more locations where the bull sharks of Bat Islands as well as the manta rays can be viewed, this 4 day 3 night camping expedition will be an epic scuba diving adventure.
