Barefoot Is Legal, a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to the barefoot lifestyle, is hosting an annual event named #HotDogsChallenge. This event will be held July 3-5.
This event is easy to participate. Simply take the pets for a walk outdoors. Barefoot. As in the humans are not wearing shoes.
David Kelman, founder & President of Barefoot Is Legal, explains the logic behind this mission.
"Most people wear shoes at all times. Many people take their dogs to the park in the afternoon. Here in Las Vegas, there is extreme heat. Dogs are stepping on blacktop when it is 110 out. The dog owners think that because THEY are wearing shoes, it is ok. The truth is, the dogs feet will burn too."
"If it is too hot or unsafe for you - it is too hot & unsafe for your dog."
Kelman recommends taking the dogs out very early in the day.
"If you take the dog to a nice grassy park at 7:30am, you can also experience the benefits of grounding before it gets too hot. Why not give that benefit to you & your dog?"
Grounding, also known as Earthing, is the practice of walking outside in the sun. Health benefits include getting natural Vitamin D from the sun, which helps protect against Coronavirus. Also, grounding has been found to improve sleep, anxiety, depression, and to help build a healthy immune system.
Sometimes people put their hand on the pavement real quick to feel the temperature.
"That is a good start." Kelman states, "However, you really do not realize how hot the pavement can be until you walk about 8 to 10 steps. "
When asked about stepping in something, Kelman was quick to answer. "I have never stepped in dog waste. I watch where I am going. However, I keep paper towels in my car and can easily wash off. There times, someone else WILL step in something. They will not know until they step on the gas pedal and notice something smells. Now, they are driving with it all over the floorboard and pedals, making a huge nasty mess that could have been avoided,"
