Riding benefits from worldwide showcase during London 2012
England - 18th September 2012
Great Britain broke records in a wealth of sports during London 2012, and the equestrian field in particular showcased a series of world-beating performances with five medals being taken by the country. The targeted figure was three, with the country even acquiring their first ever Olympic dressage medals. With a first jumping gold for 60 years also being taken by team GB, this event displayed a shift in equestrian fortunes for various countries, with the usual dominators France, Germany and Belgium leaving the event in Round One.
New ways to engage with Equestrian events

Not only was the medal tally for Team GB in all events a sizeable one, the high profile of the tournament meant the equestrian events were showcased with more prominence perhaps than ever before, with the developments in new technologies lending the Olympic and Paralympic games a vastly interactive feel, with sports fans able to engage with the games in a whole new series of ways, whether through social media or via keeping up with the action through any number of portable devices whilst on the move. This can only raise the profile of the Equestrian world and advertise riding to vast swathes of new generations. Childrens jodhpurs joy.

With equestrian heroics from jodhur-clad stars such as Charlotte Dujardin, Carl Hester and Laura Bechtolsheimer captured for repeat viewing regardless of location, as well as key performances for non-GB stars such as Michael Jung, the games provided an excellent platform for raising the profile of showjumping and dressage, whilst the successes of Dujardin showed that class and lack of privilege was no barrier when it comes to victory in equestrian spheres. This is also set to inspire more from new generations to become involved, and help to eliminate negative preconceptions. The profile of London 2012 and the various successes of the British and other equestrian teams can only have a positive, pro-active influence on new generations.
