Hair shedding is a normal function of the body and it is quite different from hair shedding after the hair transplant. Dr. Kapadia told about this difference in following words:

Normal hair shedding

Hair growth and shedding is a cycle consisting of the three stages names anagen, catagen, and telogen. Anagen is an active phase of hair growth during this phase hair grows about 1cm every 28 days. the catagen phase is a transitional phase and about 3% of all hairs are always in this phase. The telogen phase is a resting phase and most of the shedding occurs during this phase. During this phase, shedding 50-100 hairs are normal.

Shedding after hair transplant surgery

Complaints about hair shedding after the hair transplant surgery are common for the surgeons. Most of the surgeons take it as a response of the body to the trauma it experienced during the hair transplant procedure.

During the hair transplant, baldness-resistance hairs removed from the donor sites and transplanted to the bald areas. The procedure can be very traumatic for the scalp and the surrounding hairs. There, the transplanted grafts and the normal hair may fall for a temporary period. This is called ‘effluvium’ or ‘shock loss”. The patients may notice hair shedding within one month after the procedure. According to Dr. Kapadia, the patients can be fully ensured that after some months new hairs are going to grow again. The rate of the growth may be different for hairs. Hair shedding is an essential part of hair transplant and the patients must treat it as a temporary stage and it is not going to damage the hair in any way.

How can hair shedding be reduced?

Hair shedding is considered as a certain process to occur. The surgeons may apply some medications like minoxidil to promote hair growth and minimize the effects of hair shedding. Hair shedding is more likely if the stability of the hair loss or baldness is not considered. Many patients are not ready to wait while some of the patients wait for the stage when the baldness is severe and stable. There are various cosmetic camouflaging products are available in the market to cover up the balding areas.
