NYC spray tanning has taken a giant step forward, says Melms, with the Magic Tan spray booth. The process uses an ion charged tanning solution which is attracted to the skin. The booth has 27 spray nozzles, and a voice prompt will give you instructions as you tan to insure even distribution of the tanning solution. The spray process produces an evenly distributed tan in just 45 seconds.

Melms says that this method is especially popular with people who don’t have time to start the tanning process in tanning beds. According to Melms, you have your choice of three shades with the Magic Tan Spray Booth. You can select light, medium, or dark for your tan. You prepare for the tanning solution by gently exfoliating your skin to remove dead skin cells. This makes the tan last longer, and keeps the dead, dry skin cells from absorbing more than their share of the tanning solution, creating a blotched tan. The tanning process begins with the application of a resist to areas where you don’t want as much tan, such as your palms, knuckles, elbows, knees, and feet. Melms says you’ll also want to apply the resist to your fingernails and toenails, the soles of your feet and the heel area. Finally, chap stick will protect your lips. As you step into the booth, you’ll hear voice prompts that tell you how to stand, insuring that you receive an evenly distributed tan.

TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR SPRAY TAN

The tan itself will “cure” over the next few hours. Melms says you have to be careful not to go swimming or work out during that time, so that the tanning solution has a chance to do its job.
