One of North Staffordshire’s most profound twentieth century artists is creating quite a stir in the art world. Never been seen before artwork by the late Arthur Berry has now been released exclusively to a Stoke-on-Trent gallery close to Berry’s birthplace. As of last month, Barewall Gallery in Market Place, Burslem is the sole official gallery for the exhibition and sale of available Arthur Berry paintings on behalf of the estate worldwide.

The former Principal Lecturer in Painting at the North Staffordshire Polytechnic, poet and playwright Arthur Berry was a celebrated artist in life and his reputation has continued to grow since his death in 1994. Very little of his work has been released, most having been sold only via the secondary market until now.

Born in Smallthorne, Stoke-on-Trent, Berry studied at the Burslem School of Art from the age of 14, his chosen vocation despite the disability of his withered right arm. There, he studied under the famous ceramic designer Gordon Forsyth before gaining a place at the Royal College of Art in London.

Back in Stoke on Trent, working as a lecturer at the Burslem School of Art, Berry soon became rooted in capturing the people, landscape and culture of the working class people of North Staffordshire. Berry felt that the vanishing landscape of the Potteries and its people must be captured before it was lost forever and this he did in his own unique and sometimes dark style.

Amanda Bromley, owner of Barewall gallery, describes Arthur Berry as an urban legend of the Potteries. Amanda says: “Barewall are honoured and proud that Arthur Berry`s work is to be made available in Burslem, his spiritual home, his place of work and the subject and inspiration for many of his paintings. We think it is a wonderful thing and are hugely thankful to Arthur`s family for entrusting Barewall to represent such an important and wonderful collection of work by one of the great 20th century heroes of North Staffordshire."

Original artwork by Arthur Berry is now available at Barewall Gallery, 2-4 Market Place, Burslem Stoke on Trent ST6 4AT. Gallery opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.30am – 5.30pm and Saturdays 10am – 4.30pm and viewings on Sundays are by appointment only. Private views and out of hours viewings are also available.
