Remove, sell or discard a used stairlift
Over time, there may be a situation where an installed stairlift chair and rail is not required anymore. A loved one may have passed away or the user has left the home and moved to a care home and there is no need for the stairlift or the home is up for sale.
Because the stairlift is a specialised item, skilled professionals will need to hired to uninstall and remove the stairlift and rails. Although the stairlift system is used, it is possible to have the stairlift removed and sold to someone who may not find a new stairlift system affordable.
Some manufacturers or the installation company may not be willing to buying the stairlift back, even though it may new. Unfortunately, used stairlifts do not have much value and the best way to sell a used stairlift is to find the most cost-effective solution.
Because stairlifts, especially curved stairlifts, are tailored to one’s unique needs, it may prove difficult to find a new home for the chair. If the decision to get a replacement, the company that installed the used stairlift can quote for a new one and provide the opportunity to trade in the old stairlift chair. When the stairlift surveyor arrives to perform an inspection, ensure the removal of the used stairlift is included in the quote.
“For used stairlifts, a stairlift company will look at the option to buy it back; they will look at the make, model, age, the location and date when it was fitted. Some companies may not accept the buy-back option for some locations in the UK or the chair could be obsolete,” said Andrew Lewis, Director, of Associated Stairlifts.
Another option to remove or sell a used stairlift is to try to advertise on the internet. It is a popular approach to buying and selling through eBay, Gumtree and many other online shopping sites. Ensure the advertisement states the buyer needs to dismantle the stairlift and it is their responsibility to collect the stairlift.
Many stairlift companies offer to remove older stairlifts at a set price. The charge will depend on the type of stairlift as it affects the number of engineers required to dismantle it. A curved stairlift a larger, heavier and more complex than a straight one and larger rails become a risk of damage to the interior decoration if only one person tries to remove the stairlift.
Reputable and trusted suppliers will dispose of used stairlifts according to the regulations that govern an eco-friendly way and disposed of at a recycling plant. This is a specialised process due to the various different materials and metals used in the stairlift’s production. The electronic components, PCBs, cables, batteries, plastics and metals will need to be stripped and scrapped.
When the stairlift is removed the carpet will reveal a different colour and indents as a result of the stairlift's support legs being fixed.
