Philadelphia, PA, September 24, 2013 -- David Yarnall, president of IT Acceleration, began riding for MS in 2008. At that time, he did not know of anyone who was inflicted with this debilitating disease. After years of fundraising and riding these events, David has not only befriended people along the way, but has found that many folks in the community, even peers who he went to school with, live with MS every day.

“It was amazing to me to learn how many people in my community have MS. I reconnected with a woman whom I have known since kindergarten. She was diagnosed with MS 19 years ago. Others have emailed me and donated to my ride but wished to stay anonymous,” David remarked. “So I started out doing this to benefit my health and it’s become so much more than that. The people I meet and know motivate me to ride this event each year,” he added.

Multiple Sclerosis is an immune-mediated disease which attacks the spinal cord, brain and optic nerves. It is hard to diagnose and is often misdiagnosed. The disease typically strikes at a young age but no one is exempt – one can acquire MS at the age of 50 or later. Among the many symptom are weakness, loss of balance, issues with eyesight, seizures and pain.

“This year is special for me in that my friend emailed to thank me for my efforts and mentioned that a month ago she was prescribed a recently released drug which stops the progression of MS symptoms. She was thrilled. This validated to me that these events do work to promote advancements in research and treatment. My friend is in a wheelchair and probably will not regain the ability to walk but with this new drug there’s hope that the disease will not progress and make her weaker,” David said.

The Multiple Sclerosis City to Shore Bike Ride is September 28th and 29th and will host upwards of 7000 riders from the area. David concluded, “This annual event is held rain or shine and ends in Ocean City, New Jersey. The adrenaline rush you get when you turn the last corner to be cheered on by hundreds of supporters is like no other. It’s absolutely awesome and I am proud to be a part of this event.”
