Albany, NY, April 25, 2014 -- Greater NY/NJ Region #15, of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), convened in Albany earlier this month for their first annual convention and competition. More than 900 women representing 23 choruses and 41 quartets converged on the Empire State Plaza and Convention Center to compete and sing a cappella, four part harmony in the barbershop style.

Members from Greater NY/NJ Region #15 choruses performed for the public in a mass sing event on April 11th which kicked off the convention weekend. Albany Mayor, Kathy Sheehan proclaimed it “Sweet Adelines Day” and County Executive, Daniel P. McCoy also warmly welcomed to the singers to Albany. Music filled the air on the Capitol steps as the Sweet Adelines sang a few favorites for the lunchtime crowd including Let There Be Peace on Earth and Tuxedo Junction.

During the convention, choruses and individual quartets compete and are evaluated on their ability to sing in the barbershop style. The regional winners go on to compete in the international competition.

Greater Nassau Chorus (GNC) placed first in the chorus competition with a score of 710 points out of a total of 800 points. Spirit of Syracuse Chorus was second and Hickory Tree Chorus placed third. Greater Nassau Chorus will represent the region at the Sweet Adelines International Competition to be held in Las Vegas, NV on October 6-10, 2015.

Twenty-six quartets competed and the winning quartet, Foreign Exchange, will represent the region in the 2014 international competition in Baltimore, MD November 4-8, 2014. Drive! Quartet placed second and One Track Mind Quartet placed third.

Last year’s chorus winner, Liberty Oak Chorus, the wildcard winner, Harmony Celebration Chorus and a.k.a. Quartet will compete this year at the Sweet Adelines International Competition in Baltimore representing Greater NY/NJ Region #15.
