Kayla Griffin wrote this book to deflate the cliché love shown in movies and reveal the practical side of it. A relationship cannot sustain fleeting feelings and urges. It needs constant efforts and compassion to stand the test of time. Similarly, happiness between two people does not appear out of nowhere. It is a choice created by two people for each other.
Kayla and Mark's story is no different; they also faced many challenges maintaining harmony after moving in together. Kayla juggled law school and two jobs; her hectic schedule left her no time for cleaning and de-cluttering. On the contrary, Mark's life was principled and disciplined; the clutter overwhelmed him. However, despite these differences, they did not give up and communicated with each other.
While discussing her early days with Mark, "I remember telling my husband that I was afraid he would get tired of me and move on with his life. However, he showed me each day that he planned to stick around."
Kayla tried clearing up the clutter while Mark became more accepting of her struggles and nature. He would pack her lunch and give her a sticky note every day, and she would reply in the same way. This back-and-forth communication went on for an entire year, creating a safe space for each other and reassuring them their bond was too strong to be shaken by minor differences. Kayla describes this bond as "Love is the decision to appreciate what you have and the willingness to expand who you are to create space for this other person."

Mark Galaviz is a national champion collegiate speech and debate team coach, and Kayla Griffin is a visual artist specializing in figurative painting. The two met in undergraduate school and quickly became friends. Unknown to them, they both had applied to the same graduate program and were admitted into the same cohort. During their first year of study, they realized they had feelings for each other and began dating. What started with friendship bloomed into something more beautiful, a love lasting forever.
