New Delhi: In a significant development, President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday accepted the resignation of Mizoram Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan. Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has been given additional charge of the state. Mukhi will discharge the functions of the governor of Mizoram, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements are made, a spokesperson from the Rashtrapati Bhavan said.

Reports say Rajasekharan on a BJP ticket is likely to contest from the Thiruvanathapuram Lok Sabha seat and will take on Congress'sitting MP Shashi Tharoor and the CPM.

While Rajasekharan was appointed the Governor, there were call to remove him from the post as he was an "active member of the RSS and was involved with the Hindu Aikya Vedi and the VHP".

The People's Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (Prism) and the Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) said his appointment as the governor could impact Mizoram's politics as he is "political person". Before Rajasekharan became BJP president of the party's Kerala unit three years back, he was heading the Hindu Aikya Vedi.

The council had alleged that Rajasekharan is an opportunist who became a leader of the Hindu Aikya Vedi by organising notorious Nilakkal protests in Kerala in 1983. It also alleged that the BJP leader has been appointed governor to try similar tricks - which he had already played in Kerala - to vitiate the peaceful political atmosphere in Mizoram, reported The Telegraph.

5 Things to know about Kummanam Rajasekharan

Rajasekharan was born on December 23, 1952, at Kummanam village in Kerala's Kottayam district. He is a BSc graduate from CMS College Kottayam and also possesses a post-graduate diploma in journalism.

He took a plunge into politics as an activist of RSS and Sangh Parivar in Kerala in 1970.

In 1987, he resigned from government service and became a full-time Sangh Parivar worker.

Rajasekharan had been appointed as the state BJP chief in 2015.

Certain media reports say the RSS wanted Rajasekharan to return to electoral politics to give a tough fight to to Shashi Tharoor.
