Aromatherapy can Improve Sleep Quality

Posted December 22, 2018 by aromisltd

Numerous studies point to the effectiveness of using aromatherapy essential oils as a sleep aid. The oils may help to promote relaxation both before sleep, as well as improve the depth and regularity of sleep.

Boulder, CO 20-Dec-2018 - Insomnia — an occasional or frequent inability to sleep — is thought to affect about 30% of American adults. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a lack of sleep has been linked to serious problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, mood problems, and weight gain.

Aromatherapy, which translates to “scent therapy,” uses essential oils from plants to treat various ailments and health issues. The healing properties of plants are vast, and traditional communities have been using plants as medicine for thousands of years. Plant oils may be inhaled and used on the skin as part of massage therapy. The healing properties of most natural plant oils still need to be studied in-depth, however, most experts agree that they offer a low-risk option for those suffering from a range of health problems.

Though the exact mechanisms of the effects of aromatherapy on sleep have yet to be examined, most systematic studies show overwhelmingly positive results with regards to aromatherapy and sleep.
How Aromatherapy Promotes Sleep

When inhaled via an aromatherapy diffuser, the following oils may be suitable for promoting feelings of relaxation which can be useful for “winding down” before bed as well as promoting a restful sleep through the night.

• ylangylang
• lavender
• neroli
• clary sage
• frankincense
• lavender
• geranium
• chamomile

These and other oils may have the effect of lowering blood pressure, lowering cortisol levels, balancing hormones, reducing depression, calming the nervous system, lessening anxiety, and regulating appetite, all of which could, directly or indirectly, be related to sleeping patterns.

Some oils can also reduce inflammation, improve circulation, which, when combined with massage therapy, may have twice as strong as the original effect, since massage therapy can also promote circulation and reduce inflammation.

Research

It is difficult to gather conclusive evidence on the effects of aromatherapy, in part because they may be subjective, and self-reporting is typically necessary. In addition, many studies to date are relatively small. But certain oils have been studied more than others, and when used in clinical settings there are promising results.

• A 2015 review assessing the current research and literature available, which focussed on research papers published between the years 2000 and 2013, concluded that aromatherapy is effective in improving sleep quality and even more effective than just massage therapy.

• Another study concluded that aromatherapy was useful to improve sleep cycles and quality on nurses doing night shifts. Though this was a small sample, it led to recommendation that aromatherapy be suggested as health and sleep promotion tool for employee health.

• Research investigating the efficacy of aromatherapy (lavender, neroli and chamomile) on blood pressure, anxiety and sleep in 56 ICU patients with cardiac stents yielded positive results.

These are just a few of many studies pointing to specific uses of aromatherapy in clinical settings to help with relaxation and sleep.

Aromatherapy for Safe and Non-Addictive Health Support

In light of the millions of people worldwide who suffer from sleep problems, and the potential consequences that this can result in, such complementary treatments are worth exploring as a safe and non-addictive alternative to sleeping pills.

Simply purchasing one of many types of essential oil kits — which include a glass nebulizer and aromatherapy essential oils — and keeping it bedside so that the oils can be inhaled throughout the night is a beneficial step towards health and restfulness.
