How to Prevent Team Building Games from Going Wrong and What to Do When They Do

Neither the firm, nor the workers, were prepared for the consequences of a team building programme implemented by a California-based home security company.

Sales teams competed against one another in this game of wits. It was for this reason that they were strategically placed throughout the game in order for the crew to "fight each other to death." The winning team threw pies at the losing team after they degraded them with diapers and baby food on the losing side.
Employees sued the company for USD1.7 million after the occurrence, and the award was made in their favour! What a bunch of bull!

One or more of the aforementioned traits may be missing from certain team-building activities, but many do fulfil all of them. When teams compete against one another, they feel that the best team games put players against one another in intense contests with clear winners and losers. This is not the case at all, since most companies urge their employees to collaborate rather than compete fiercely. If at all feasible, they would want to work in a team atmosphere. Which team-building exercises emphasise competition rather than collaboration in this situation?

The following are a few of the reasons why team-building events are so boring:

We don't fully grasp the following overarching purposes and objectives. Employees may be surprised by the employer's tactics, but it might backfire. If people aren't clear on the end goal, there's a higher chance of conflict. Instead, companies should talk to their employees about the initiative. It's also a viable option to empower workers with decision-making authority. It is possible for companies to begin building productive teams by valuing their workers' ideas and giving them with what they need or want.

Fear-mongering as a way to motivate people to work together

Facilitators might give participants a large assignment to do as their first activity. About 90% of those who participated didn't put out their best effort. Facilitators must design games in a logical order, beginning with activities that address the present condition of the group. Is the team a cohesive unit? If this is the case, is it essential for the team to first resolve a dispute? The difficulty level must be steadily raised over time in order to ensure equal participation.

As a consequence of intense rivalry, there is a rise in conflict. Collaboration, not competition, is the bedrock of successful collaboration. Research shows that teams who choose a cooperative approach rather than a competitive one have an advantage of over 87%. It's easy to see why this is the case. To put it another way, you end up with everyone losing yet you just want your side to win. People's performance declines when they are depressed about their self-esteem. Players that are pressed for time may turn to unethical measures in an effort to gain an advantage. Furthermore, research shows that people lose knowledge when they fight. A better approach would be to use team-building activities to promote the transfer of knowledge rather than to identify and reward the winners.

A lack of dedication

Managers often mistake the programme for a practical joke designed to entertain their employees. Team members are prone to acting out their anger in a bad manner, which results in a lack of productivity. Building a strong team is an important value, and senior management must share this belief if the firm is to succeed. Last but not least, the team building activities are every bit as good as the company that puts them on. A team of subject-matter experts can aid management in making the best choices when it comes to achieving their goals. Team building specialists that are excited about their work and eager to work with you to guarantee the success of your team are essential.
