For many refractory installations, the dry-out portion of the project can be the most frustrating. It looks like the work is completed, the vessel looks brand new, and there are always intense pressures to “fire it up” and get production ramped back up after a costly outage. At Schad, we are often asked by customers, “Do we really need to do this?” or “Isn’t there something that we can do to speed this up?” In some cases, alternative materials may be an option, and may provide value if they can eliminate or expedite this step of the project, however, once the materials have been placed the answer is almost certainly a resounding, “No!”

Although it may be tempting to speed things up or by-pass the dry-out step altogether, it is critical to understand that aggression with regard to a dry-out schedule in the short-term can have highly costly long-term ramifications. Wherever possible it is advisable to be conservative. Getting a refractory lining too hot too fast can cause excessive cracking, spalling, or may even cause significant portions of a new installation to blow up. It may also negatively impact the properties achieved by the new materials decreasing their useful lifespan.
