Cancer is a pathological condition of uncontrolled growth of cells, invasion and sometimes metastasis in the body. Possible signs and symptoms of cancer are: a new lump, abnormal bleeding, and a prolonged cough, and unexplained weight loss, change in bowel movement. Approximately 5 – 10 % of cancers are due to genetic defects. Cancer is confirmed by biopsy. Many cancers can be prevented by: maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, not drinking too much alcohol, eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and grains, avoiding too much exposure to sunlight. Cancer is treated with radiation therapy, surgery, chemotherapy and targeted therapy.
Cancer can spread from its local sites to distant sites. The great majority of cancer (90 – 95 %) is due to environmental factors. Most cancer deaths are due to the spreading of cancer from its locations to other organs of body. Cancer is one of leading cause of mortality. From the research it is clear that most people ignore the signs and symptoms of cancer which cause increase in the rate of mortality. There are many cause of cancer including: benzene and other products, drinking excess of alcohol, smoking, environmental toxins such as poisonous mushrooms, poisonous peanut plants, excessive sunlight exposure, genetic disorder, obesity, radiations and viruses.
The most common cause of cancer – related death is the lung cancer. The three most common cancer in men is: prostate cancer, colon cancer and lung cancer. In the women the three most common cancer is: breast cancer, colon cancer and lung cancer. Some cancers are very common in certain parts of world are: stomach cancer, brain cancer, leukemia, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, cervical cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, ovarian cancer, non – Hodgkin’s lymphoma, skin cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid cancer and uterine cancer.
The main symptoms in most cases of cancer are: chills, fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, malaise, night sweat and weight loss. Most cancers are diagnosed by biopsy. On the basis of location of cancer the biopsy may be done by simple procedure or by serious operation. Treatment varies depending on the type of cancer and its stage. The diagnosis and treatment of cancer often cause the lots of anxiety and can affect the person’s entire life. An estimate of 6.7 million people dies due to cancer every year in all parts of world. But now the more people are surviving diagnosis due to earlier detection, better screening and due to the improved treatments.
