Much have been said about diplomacy. In addition to that most of us have proper understand of how diplomacy works from a honorary consul or a diplomat get diplomatic appointment, to types of missions to how to get a diplomatic passport and the list is endless. But the most forgotten bit of diplomacy is its mission. Why is it so important for a state to appoint a diplomat to represent it in foreign countries? Let us find out.
OBJECTIVES OF DIPLOMACY
Objectives of diplomacy are as follows;
• Diplomacy designed to embarrass the opposite party.
To embarrass means to weaken the enemy so that the opposite party should not use more and more power. In such a situation, diplomats get diplomatic appointments from their native states and a purpose is given to them to embarrass the enemy state. So what exactly does embarrass means? It simply means putting the enemy state in a confused position to gain something at the cost of another party. Therefore, an embarrassing position is nothing but confusion. It is what Menon termed as”pistols for two, coffee for one”
For example, all the disarmament conferences, the two superpowers (US and USSR) during their talks and discussions, they tried to embarrass the other states by concealing their basic motives, plans and goals diplomatically.
• Diplomacy designed to weaken and divide the enemy
The relations between nations may be hostile or friendly. But in either way, a state has to prevent the other state from exercising excessive power or dominance on them. This they do by appointing a honorary consul or a diplomat to go and tell a lie for the good of his country. In this situation a honorary consul is defined “ as an honest man sent abroad to tell a lie for the good of his country”
A good example where diplomatic appointments were sent to diplomats with the main objective if keeping the enemy bloc divided was in india. During the war of Bangladesh played a diplomatic role of dividing Pakistan into Eastern Pakistan and Western Pakistan. At the same time, India established good relations with Bangladesh and made Pakistan friendless. Designed to settle for disputes by peaceful means and methods
In most states, honorary consuls are appointed to promote peace between countries. Preservation of peace was and is still the main reason behind diplomacy. In addition to that, most diplomats tend to accept honorary consul appointments presented to them with an aim of maintaining peace. The means and methods to settle the disputes are discussions, compromises, negotiations, conciliations, good offices, mediation, arbitration, persuasion and cooperation.
CONCLUSION
Therefore, there is always an objective behind diplomacy. In addition to that, no objective is more superior to the other. All of them protect the diplomats’ native land from being over powered by the enemy block and to maintain peace too. Therefore, upon receiving a diplomatic appointment letter, one should understand what the main objective behind that appointment is and work towards achieving it.
