In schools taking contemporaneous notes is considered as a critical skill. But this is not the only setting where such notes are important. Even if someone has very sharp memory, it is not possible to retain everything. Following are some salient benefits of taking notes:
• Improves writing and communication skills
• Improves recall and memorization
• Improves the ability to summarize
• Makes you competent, hard worker and organized as well
From the word ‘notes’ the first concept comes into mind is the school notes; however there are some other settings where notes could be beneficial.
Professional:
• In a meeting of staff, taking notes is considered great in order to stay focused as well as remember all the important details discussed in the meeting. It looks more professional and trustworthy.
• Taking contemporaneous notes of certain tasks as they come to mind has been an important skill and helps increase the productivity.
• Police notes are also very beneficial in keeping the case history of criminals
• In the medical field nursing notes are extremely important to keep the record of patients.
• You can take the work-place harassment notes in case the issue is required to take in court.
To take better notes:
To take great notes requires legible handwriting, great listening skills, skill to create organized outlines as well as ability to pinpoint key points. For making best possible notes you have to follow the following points:
1. Select the main ideas:
Always look for the main idea as it is important to know that you are reading actually. Ask yourself what you want and need to obtain.
2. Take notes of events, people and dates:
Consider the information as important that carries the names of officials, events, statistics, dates or any other numbers.

3. Summarize:

No matter you are reading or listening, the information you are obtaining should be summarized as it keeps the focus on the actual main idea.
4. Abbreviate:
Abbreviation is good but you should abbreviate the words in such a manner that it would not create any sort of confusion later; otherwise spell out whole word.

5. Bullet points:
Making bullet points is considered very useful in different kinds of notes like police notes and nursing notes.

6. write as you read:
To take organized contemporaneous notes do write as you read instead you read a lot and go back to take notes.

7. Write as you listen:
In class it is good to pay full attention towards the lecture instead of taking note but the possibility to keep all the things remembered is slim; so powerful listening skills and great writing abilities is the key for best notes.
