If you have ever lost a key or break a key in a lock then you understand the level of frustration involved in that situation. New York Locksmiths can testify of the numerous incidents of key loss their clients have presented to them. The following are some of the techniques you may employ to replace a damaged lock or key. If they wont help then don’t fret, you can easily find a Locksmith in New York who can charge a small fee to replace a lock or key.
Lost key
For house doors you will not only need a new key but also a new lock as an effective security measure. If you prefer re-keying only then you will have to use the services of a locksmith who should have the necessary tools to produce a new key. If you have lost your car keys with no spare set, your local automotive locksmith will be able to help obtain a set of new keys for any vehicle you have. There are two types of car keys;
• Transponder chip keys
• Electronic chip / remote keys
Most Locksmiths in New York will need you to prove ownership of the car so you will need to provide original car documents.
Snapped key in lock
If you have spare keys for the lock, the first step will be to remove the broken key from the lock. This can be done using pliers to grip the protruding part of the broken key. If we experience difficulty pulling the key, a lubricant can be applied before twisting the key to lock position then pull it. If there is no protruding part of the broken key then a key extractor can be used to pull the key.
Rusty lock
A lock exposed to rain for a long time may rust while shut becoming tough or impossible to unlock. Apply an ample amount of kerosene to the padlock ensuring it reaches the inner mechanical parts of the lock. If the lock is portable you can soak it in kerosene. This will help to soften debris that blocks movement of the mechanical parts.
Misalignment
A new padlock may jam due to misalignment. This usually occurs where you have moved into a house as a first tenant. Widen the interlocking hole or striking plate for easy movement of the latch. You may also grind off a layer from the latch with a metal file while testing to see where the problem arises and shaving off until it fits perfectly. If the cylinder screws are misaligned, the faceplate is removed and the cylinders are turned clockwise to tighten them. This will help realign the cylinder and ease the movement of the cylinder plug during operation.
