Mechanical locks need to be frequently serviced to function properly and avoid breaking. Locks are used for many purposes and can be fitted in different appliances. The most common fittings are;
• Rim locks – Fitted on the surface of the door
• Mortise locks – Fitted inside the door
As time goes, locks may be destroyed by natural factors making them to not function properly.
Prepare duplicate keys
Loss of keys is very common. The fastest solution for lost keys is to replace a lock with a new one. To avoid replacing a lock each time you loose your keys then you should consider making one or two duplicate copies to serve as backup. Once a key begins to wear out, replace it.
Cleaning
Old mortise and rim locks normally accumulate dust and rust within their components making them very stiff to operate. You may use compressed air to blow through the key hole of a mortise lock. The cover plate of a rim lock can be detached to expose the inner parts so that you can use a soft brush to clean out the dust. If dust and rust are mixed with a liquid lubricant they make a very effective grinding paste which will wear the moving parts. It is thus important to use a dry lubricant to prevent corrosion such as WD-40.
Check the door position
A hanging door is a result of its own weight pulling the door down. This will dislocate the position of interlocking of a bolt and hole. You should frequently check your door position to ensure that it is in good shape.
Clogging
Clogging will be caused by difficulty in parts moving against each other. This might be as a result of the introduction of foreign objects into the mechanical parts of the lock. The quickest solution is to spray WD-40 directly into the key hole while turning the key in the lock a few times. Alternatively you can coat the key with graphite for easy penetration.
Worn out parts
For a lock with worn out parts you may need to disassemble it first. Loosen the screws on one knob to release both sides and pull them from the door. Unlock the faceplates, knobs then handles to expose the deadbolts. Lubricate all moving parts with silicone, motor oil, graphite lubricant or WD-40. Test to see if parts are moving as required. Replace parts that are beyond repair with new parts from another lock then reinstall.
