Diplomatic appointments are appointments that are carried out by a nation. The appointees are usually given the jobs to represent their respective nations in other states. Their job is mostly to represent their governments and protect their interests as well. The president and his government are the ones responsible for making these diplomatic appointments. The task of the diplomats is to ensure that the two nations have a good diplomatic relationship at all times. The president mostly gives diplomatic appointments to citizens who have experience working as civil servants or those that belong to his political fold. The diplomatic office is most of the times an extension of the ministry of foreign affairs. Diplomatic appointments from the other citizens are very rare.

Once the head of state makes diplomatic appointments, the appointees are required to present their credentials to the head of state of the country that he/she has been posted. This process is known as diplomatic accreditation. The diplomats ensure that they present their papers to the president of the host nation. These papers are always endorsed by the president of the nation from where the diplomatic appointments have been carried out. The content of the papers usually is a note advising the host state that the appointments are in order and that this fact must be respected. The papers presentation is usually done in a formal procedure, and this is the time that the diplomatic appointee is welcomed to the state by the host president. If the diplomatic appointments papers are not presented to the host nation’s president, then the appointee cannot carry out any duties as per the diplomatic relations convention stipulation carried out in Vienna.

Diplomatic appointments can be given to individuals to represent their nation in two different states. This means that a diplomat can reside in one of the two nations and then work by travelling to the other state as and when required to do so. This process is referred to as dual accreditation. By doing this, a country is able to have a full representation even if the diplomat is not residing in the host nation mostly due to scarcity of resources. Diplomatic appointments are usually carried out when the diplomat who has previously held the position is retired or has been called back to his/her country for one reason or another. Most of the times the appointee may be called back to represent his/her nation in another country, or can be redeployed to another government office at home.
