The press release is about a neurological disease called epilepsy. One effective treatment for it is stem cell therapy.

What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a neurological disease characterized by unprovoked recurrent seizures, caused by abnormal activity of brain. This is a complex disease that has multiple syndromes, diagnostic criteria and strategies for treatment. One such strategy that has recently gained popularity is stem cell therapy.

Epilepsy is a devastating disease that has affected millions of people all over the world. People suffering from this disease can have bouts of depression, aggression and other psychiatric ailments. It becomes worse with time when left untreated.

What are the Treatment Options Available?

Stem cell therapy is one option when it comes to treatment for epilepsy. Other treatments for epilepsy include the use of surgical resection and antiepileptic drugs. Use of antiepileptic drugs reduces the overall firing of the brain to mitigate the rate of occurrence of seizures. Surgery for epilepsy removes a portion of brain that leads to the seizures.

There are other options that treat the seizure-generating neurological aspect of epilepsy, but these treatments fail to address the neuropsychiatric components of the disease. Stem cells are used for the treatment of epilepsy. Stem cell therapy has been studied to provide treatment for Parkinson’s disease and several other neuropsychiatric diseases like depression.

Research today focuses on a variety of neurological-based disorders ranging from epilepsy to depression. Additional research is also required to see if the stem cells are able to treat both the neuropsychiatric and neurological aspects of epilepsy. Today, there is no animal model which can recapitulate the clinical hallmarks of epilepsy.

This can be due to the difficulty in characterizing the neuropsychiatric component of epilepsy. Experimental testing to treat the efficacy and safety of these autologus and allogeneic stem cell transplants require the optimization of the cell dosage.

People are hopeful about the treatment. It looks like the therapy may be useful for for Alzheimer’s disease treatment.
