The Cottages have long been leaders in utilizing cutting edge technology to provide the best care to those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Frisco, Texas, Dec 06, 2019 - The Cottages have long been leaders in utilizing cutting edge technology to provide the best care to those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Their focus has always been on building memory care communities that mimic a home environment and are filled with natural light and access to the outdoors throughout their spaces. Now, this approach is backed by even more science.

A brand new pilot study has demonstrated the importance of natural light in the care of those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. Assistant professor Kyle Konis from USC piloted a study examining the effects of day lighting on those suffering from memory loss. The results?Simply put; quality and quantity of light matters. Konis discovered that spaces filled with natural light can help reduce symptoms of depression, a common occurrence in those living with memory disorders. Specifically, having daylight between the hours of 8 am and 10 am was found to be ideal.

Visiting The Cottages’ community in Frisco, their dedication to day lighting throughout the community has been paying off. Using additional research from the Mayo Clinic, The Cottages communities feel very home-like. Color-coded apartments and cottages help residents remember which is theirs, while common formal family rooms and living rooms allow for plenty of space to entertain and socialize. Secure walking paths and gardens, along with al fresco dining opportunities, encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors. This dedication to natural light and a home-like environment is just one of the many ways The Cottages focus on providing the best possible care for their residents.

Research has shown that intellectual stimulation, socialization, and exercise improves quality of life. Victor Regnier, professor of gerontology and architecture at USC, believes that residents in senior living communities can benefit from having a sense of purpose and a lifestyle as similar to their independent pasts as possible. And the Cottages agree. The Cottages offer unique activities and programming designed specifically for those struggling with a memory disorder. Bringing in outside experts to teach a lesson or run an activity and having Alzheimer’s certified Activities Directors on staff are two of the services The Cottages provide to all residents.

As new research continues to expand and detail the best practices for caring for those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, The Cottages will continue to transform the lives of their residents and families.
