Hair Stem Cell- The future of hair restoration

Posted November 18, 2015 by aishakhan

Hair loss has become a common issue today. Many people, inflicted by this issue, prefer to go for various alternatives, which claim to restore their lost hairs.

Amongst many of these remedies, hair transplant surgery is the most prevailing one. Due its widely growing popularity, many advances have been made in this field in order to satisfy the targeted people.

According to some latest researches, the recent advancements in hair stem cells claim to have a very promising future for the patients in this field. Over the past 2 years, the research on the stem cells for hair follicles has evolved very quickly.
Hair growth occurs by going through some normal cycles. Growth, loss and replacement of hairs go simultaneously. The hair follicles go through the growth and resting phase. However, due to some changes in the normal cycle of hair growth, hair loss occurs. A number of factors effects the life cycle of each hair follicle. These varieties of factors include the age of the individual, any sort of disease inflicted to the patient, genetic factors, stress and many others.
Recent researches show that by regenerating the hair follicles, one can actually get a non-surgical and a natural looking treatment for hair loss. More surprisingly, the researchers have actually worked out how to manipulate the stem cells in the test tubes.
Stem cells are basically those human cells which have the ability to be converted to any other cells of the body. Today, some researchers have succeeded in transforming these stem cells into ‘dermal papilla cells’. These dermal papilla cells are responsible for regulating the formation and growth of hair follicles. When they injected these dermal papilla cells onto mice, they actually showed hair growth.
General Mechanism:
Hair follicles are regenerated by going through three basic phases of their life cycle:
1. Anagen
2. Catagen
3. Telogen
Every hair follicle comes with stem cells, but when these hair follicles get old enough, or become worn out, they lose their ability to start the regeneration process. This results in hair loss. However, for the treatment of hair loss stem cells are harvested from one’s own peripheral blood. These cells are known as ‘Autologous stem cells’.
This process of hair restoration occurs in two steps. By using minimally invasive procedure, the stem cells are collected. Then, these stem cells are injected into the pores of the scalp. The skin layer then sends signals to the cells present in the follicles. This results in the growth of new hairs. Moreover, one other advantage of stem cells is that it can transform the dead hair follicles into healthier and growing ones.
Within 3-4 weeks of treatment, the results will be visible. During three sessions of treatment, one can actually increase the density of their hairs by 30-50%. Although, this experimental technique is not widely available to humans yet, still the researchers are finding a way to make it as a mean of hair restoration in future.
