Are you facing problems with your furnace? Does it keep on turning on and off frequently? Well, that must be a furnace short-cycling issue. Here is a compact blog that will tell you what to do in such a case.

One of the common issues that everyone faces with their furnace is short-cycling or overheating. This problem can seem irritating, especially when you and your family want to stay comfortable and warm during winters.

Unfortunately, one cannot pinpoint the exact problem of short-cycling unless he/she is a professional. So, it is wise to call professionals for maintenance. But, if you wish to know what might be the cause, then here are some reasons for furnace short-cycling:

1- Filter is dirty: Dirty filter is one of the common reasons for short-cycle or overheating furnace. This is because the dirty filter prevents the returned air's flow into the furnace. And with no return air, the system will quickly overheat and turn off. To get rid of the issue, you will require changing the furnace filter.

2- Heat grates are blocked: Blocked heat grates are another reason for furnace overheating as it doesn't let enough air out from the system. You will notice that the furnace stops working between 3-10 minutes, resulting in the warm room. In fact, the air coming out of the grates can be even warmer or hotter than normal.

3- Exhaust vent is blocked: The reason for the block in the exhaust vent can be a bird's nest, small animals, beehives or snow. If you think either of these issues is causing the blockage, get rid of the exhaust flue's obstruction.

4- The thermostat is in the wrong place: The location of the thermostat in your house matters a lot. This is because if your thermostat gets warmed up before the rest of your house, then it will result in turning off the furnace prematurely. This situation is common in the house where the thermostat was installed by the homeowner.

5- Furnace is too large for your house: Many homes have a bigger furnace. Well, bigger is never better when it comes to the HVAC system. Your furnace should be of proper size as per your house. So, if you think this is the issue, then replace the whole system and check for proper size Furnace Pricing in Ottawa.

6- Furnace has a bad flame senor: Improperly working flame sensor or flame rod will shut off immediately after the lighting. If you want to determine if this is the reason for short-cycling, then remove the cover from the furnace to check the burner firing and listen to the whooshing sound it makes. The inducer motor should run for 30 to 60 seconds before the gas gets fired. If there is not firing, then this may be the problem.
