In Afghanistan, the democratic flag represents unity, but unfortunately, the country has failed to maintain peace. The current situation shows that books are being exchanged for weapons, which is an alarming reality. It is high time that the education efforts for all Afghans are rethought, as education could sustain the country's poor and lead to poverty eradication and better health rates.
An Afghan-Canadian peace activist, Melad Ahmadzai has been advocating for real and stable peace in Afghanistan. He states, "I witnessed the closing of girls' schools when I was in Afghanistan last year by Taliban militants." "This is contrary to a sustainable and prosperous future."
Right now, the war-torn country needs a robust education system that can equip its people with the skills and knowledge to rebuild the nation. Ahmadzai adds, "education can provide opportunities for economic growth and promote social development, which is the need."
The international community will come together to voice in support of free education in Afghanistan sometime next month. At the moment, the Taliban have closed all girls schools and preventing women from work.
The civil society and the international community are scheduled to meet in May in order to improve the education system and ensure that education is accessible to all.
