Most of us have worn Schuerzen at some moment in life or another, and some of us continue wearing them every day when cooking or as part of our work uniform. Parents all over the world use Latzschuerzen for their babies so that they don’t stain their clothes. Thus, aprons have an aesthetic and practical role at the same time. But how did aprons appear? Let’s read a bit of history.

There was a time when people only used to have a few garments they wore all the time, usually one garment for every day work and another onefor special occasions. During the Middle Ages, while royal families could afford wearing glamorous and extravagant clothes, peasants and other categories of people would use simple and cheap fabrics and clothes. They couldn’t afford buying clothes so they had to look for ways in which to protect the few clothes they hadfor as much time as possible. Schuerzen thus appeared as a cheap way of keeping clothes clean so that they could be worn for longer periods of time.

In time, women made Latzschuerzen more aesthetic by adding colorful embroidery and changing designs. Thus, aprons began being used as fashion garments. Medieval women used to wear them over dresses to complement their attires and in some cultures they became essential elements in traditional clothing. Women used to wear them wherever they went: to church, to the market, at social gatherings etc.

Schuerzen have always been associated with housecleaning, housekeeping and cooking. Servants to aristocratic families always wore aprons around the residence and this served as a symbol of status. During the 20th century, women were commonly depicted on adverting posters wearing Latzschuerzen. Nowadays, things have changed a bit and we’re seeing men also wearing Latzschuerzen. Schuerzen have changed in design throughout time, but their main function remains the same: to protect clothing from being damaged or stained. Women and men alike use aprons when cooking or cleaning, or because their job requires them to do so. For example, nurses, cooks, cleaning personnel must use aprons when working, part to protect their clothing and part to keep respectable business etiquette. In restaurants, it’s essential for waiters and other employees to use aprons: aprons are associated with cleanliness and professionalism. Of course, they must be impeccable at all times.

In time, people have designed many types of aprons: tuxedo-styled aprons, waist aprons, cobbler aprons, bib aprons etc. Bib aprons are designed to protect the chest as well as the lower part of the body, so their main role is to offer efficient protection. Most people nowadays use Latzschuerzenin the kitchen, where all the dirt is. Bib aprons can be more elegant than smaller aprons, but that depends on what model and fabric you choose. Online, you can find a large a variety of aprons, either exclusively for women or universal aprons which can be used by any person. The fact that we’re still using aprons shows that these are valuable garment artifacts which will always have practical and esthetic value.
