In an effort to equip students with essential skills for their future careers, Westmoreland University of Virginia hosted an engaging workshop focused on resume writing. The event took place on October 20, 2024, in the university's Student Center and attracted a diverse group of participants eager to enhance their job application materials.
The workshop, led by a team of experienced career services professionals and student leaders, provided practical advice on crafting effective resumes. Participants learned about various resume formats, how to tailor their resumes to specific job descriptions, and the importance of showcasing their unique skills and experiences. The workshop included interactive activities where students received hands-on assistance in drafting and refining their resumes.
"We understand that creating a compelling resume can be challenging for many students," said Sarah Thompson, Director of Career Services at WUOV. "This workshop aimed to demystify the process and empower our students to present themselves confidently to potential employers."
Throughout the session, attendees were encouraged to ask questions and share their own experiences in the job search process. The workshop also featured a panel discussion with local employers who offered insights into what they look for in resumes and how candidates can stand out in a competitive job market.
One of the participants, John Smith, a junior majoring in Business Administration, expressed his enthusiasm for the workshop: "I found the information incredibly helpful. I had always struggled with formatting my resume, but the tips I received today made it much easier. I feel more confident about applying for internships now."
The workshop was part of WUOV’s broader initiative to support students' career development. In addition to resume writing, the university offers a range of career services, including interview preparation, networking opportunities, and job search resources. The university's commitment to student success extends beyond the classroom, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their professional futures.
"We want our students to leave WUOV not just with a degree but with the skills they need to thrive in their careers," said Thompson. "Workshops like these are vital in bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world application."
The success of the resume writing workshop has prompted plans for similar events in the future. WUOV’s Career Services department is currently working on scheduling additional workshops that will cover topics such as job interviewing techniques, personal branding, and networking strategies.
Students and alumni are encouraged to take advantage of these resources to enhance their employability and gain a competitive edge in the job market. The Career Services department at WUOV remains dedicated to providing the tools and support students need to achieve their career goals.
