Students at Durham University of North Carolina organized a successful resume writing workshop aimed at helping peers improve their job application skills.

In an effort to equip their peers with essential job-hunting skills, students at Durham University of North Carolina (DUNC) organized a hands-on workshop focused on resume writing. The event, held on October 20, 2024, attracted over 50 attendees, demonstrating the strong interest among students to enhance their career readiness.
The workshop featured presentations from experienced professionals, including career advisors and alumni, who shared their insights on crafting effective resumes that stand out in today’s competitive job market. The students participated in interactive sessions where they learned about the latest trends in resume writing, including the importance of tailoring resumes for specific job applications and utilizing keywords effectively to pass through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).
“Creating a strong resume is the first step in the job search process,” said Emily Johnson, a senior majoring in Business Administration and one of the workshop organizers. “Our goal was to provide practical tips and strategies that our peers can use to improve their resumes and boost their confidence as they apply for internships and jobs.”
The workshop included a live demonstration of how to format a resume, highlighting key sections such as objective statements, work experience, education, and skills. Participants were encouraged to bring their current resumes for real-time feedback from facilitators, making the experience both informative and personalized.
In addition to resume writing techniques, the workshop emphasized the importance of networking and building a personal brand. Attendees learned how to leverage online platforms like LinkedIn to showcase their professional profiles and connect with potential employers.
“Many students underestimate the value of a well-crafted resume and a robust online presence,” said Dr. Sarah Thompson, Director of Career Services at DUNC. “Events like this are crucial in preparing our students for the job market, ensuring they have the tools and knowledge needed to succeed.”
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the practical advice and the opportunity to network with industry professionals. Students left the workshop with enhanced resumes and a clearer understanding of the steps they need to take to secure their desired job positions.
The DUNC Career Services team plans to host similar workshops in the future, focusing on various aspects of the job search process, including interview techniques, cover letter writing, and networking strategies. These initiatives align with the university’s commitment to providing students with comprehensive support as they transition from academia to the workforce.
