Online dating and hookup sites come in a variety of flavors. There is something for everybody. Most of these sites have mechanisms in place to keep fake profiles out. However, not all sites police themselves equally. Inevitably, if you participate on dating and hookup sites you will encounter the dreaded fake profile.

What is a fake profile, you ask? It is a user profile that does not belong to a real person. Some are created by trolls to harass users. Others are catfish posing as someone they are not just to get some cheap thrills. Some dating sites actually create their own version of fake profiles to try and lure members to pay for upgrades. As you can see, fake profiles can lurk anywhere, so it would be prudent for you to be able to identify them before you end up wasting your time or money. Here are some tips to help you spot them.

Not having a profile picture or profile description is a huge red flag. Likewise, profile pics that look too good to be true can be another warning sign. You know the types of pics we are talking about —the ones in which the person looks like a professional model. A good way to verify a pic is to run a reverse image search on Google Images. That way you can determine if it was "lifted" off the web.

Sometimes profile pictures are not enough to spot a fake profile. You will not notice until you start interacting with the profile owner via online chat. Fake profiles used for this type of interaction fall into one of two categories, the chat-bots and the deceptive humans.

Chat-bots are computer programs that generate automated messages. These are easy to spot after a short exchange because the messages will always seem generic. Even if you ask specific questions you will never receive precise answers. After all, you are chatting with a computer.

Deceptive humans hiding behind a fake profile are more difficult to uncover, but not impossible. If you start receiving messages that sound "off." In other words, if the messages are written in non-native English and the profile owner purports to be a lifelong native of Kansas, you know that something is not right. Likewise, if you receive messages encouraging you to open links to websites or images, avoid those like the plague. Chances are that it is a fake profile trying to lure you to open a file that could install malware on your system.
